Are frozen veggies & fruits less nutritious than their fresh counterparts? The answer may surprise you!
With the majority of the world now on lockdown, many of us health-conscious folks are worrying about how we can still get in our daily dose of vegetables & fruits.
In an ideal world we would all have a garden in our backyard, grow our own produce & pick it fresh. But we all know that just isn’t feasible. Fresh produce outlets are a great option, but during a global pandemic we may not have access.
Many people incorrectly assume that buying fresh is always better, but this simply isn’t true! In fact, eating frozen veggies & fruits may be even more nutritious!
Vegetables & fruits have the highest vitamin, mineral & antioxidant content when they are first picked. The longer the fruit/vegetable has been off its stem, the more time its nutrient content has been steadily declining.
By the time you purchase your produce at the local market or grocery store, it may have been picked several days ago, due to transport time, stocking, etc. In other words, that “fresh” produce may not be as fresh as you think.
On the other hand, when fruits and vegetables go through the freezing process they are frozen immediately after picking – aka at their nutritious peak. Basically, the nutrients are frozen in.
So if your only option in your “kingdom of isolation” is frozen produce, don’t have a meltdown! The frozen broccoli & berries you opt for can be just as, if not more, nutritious!
I know times are absolutely crazy right now, but please do not neglect your nutrition! Remember to keep eating your veggies & fruits to keep your immune system strong!
